Good news for employees, DA will soon increase from 3% to 4%

A 3-4% hike in dearness allowance (DA) is expected in 2024 for central government employees and pensioners. According to sources, the government may announce this hike by the end of September.

This will benefit more than 50 lakh employees and 65 lakh pensioners. After the 4% hike in March 2024, this new hike will provide further relief to the dearness allowance of government employees. Dearness allowance is revised every year in January and July, the main objective of which is to protect employees from the impact of rising inflation.

Dearness allowance is calculated on the basis of Consumer Price Index (CPI-IW). The average increase is calculated on the basis of inflation in the last 12 months. This process helps the government to understand how much allowance employees should get to deal with inflation. Changes in DA are made by the government twice every year in January and July, and it is announced in March and September.

Instalments postponed during Corona period

Due to the Kovid-19 epidemic, some installments of DA were postponed in 2020 and 2021. The government did not increase the installments of 1 January 2020, 1 July 2020, and 1 January 2021, due to which employees and pensioners did not get the benefit of any increase at that time. However, later it was resumed by amending the DA.

Pensioners will also get benefit

Dearness allowance is provided not only to existing employees but also to pensioners. The increase in DA will also provide Dearness Relief (DR) to pensioners, which will also help them to deal with rising inflation.

The Eighth Pay Commission is being continuously demanded by the employee unions, but the government has not taken any concrete steps on it yet. The Seventh Pay Commission came into force in 2016, and a new pay commission is normally constituted every 10 years. However, no official announcement has been made on this subject yet.

What will be the benefits for central employees?

If there is a DA increase of 3-4% this time, it will give a good increase to the salary of central employees. This will have a direct impact on the salary according to the grade pay. For example, if the basic salary of an employee is Rs 18,000 and the current DA is 50%, then he is getting a DA of Rs 9,000. If there is a 4% increase in DA, he will get an additional Rs 720, making the total DA Rs 9,720.
